A derivatives wallet is a security boundary and execution tool

A wallet does not merely store keys. It authorizes collateral movement, trading, contract approvals, and emergency actions.

Separate trading from long-term storage

A dedicated trading wallet can limit the assets exposed to protocol approvals and daily activity. Long-term holdings can remain in a separate security domain. This separation does not eliminate smart-contract risk, but it can reduce the blast radius of a compromised interface or approval.

Use hardware signing where appropriate and verify the transaction destination and action rather than relying on interface labels.

Approvals create persistent authority

Token approvals can allow a contract to move assets up to a stated amount. Review and revoke permissions that are no longer needed. Unlimited approvals improve convenience but increase the consequence of a compromised contract.

Bookmark verified interfaces and distrust urgent support messages or unsolicited transaction prompts.

Recovery must include open positions

A seed phrase backup alone is not an operational plan. Document chain, protocol, collateral, and open exposure so an authorized recovery process can identify urgent obligations.

Questions

Common points of confusion

Does self-custody eliminate counterparty risk?

It reduces some custody dependence but adds key, approval, smart-contract, oracle, and protocol governance risks.

Should a trading wallet hold all crypto assets?

Separating active trading assets from long-term storage can reduce exposure to approvals and interface risks.

Can a wallet recover a liquidated position?

No. Key recovery restores control but does not reverse contract execution or liquidation.

Risk first
