Market structure guide

Altcoin options are trades on direction, time and volatility

Options can define the buyer’s maximum premium loss, but pricing and execution require more than a directional forecast.

The basic payoff

A call gives its buyer upside rights above a strike under the contract terms. A put gives downside rights below a strike. The buyer pays premium; the seller receives premium and accepts an obligation. Contract multiplier and settlement determine the actual dollar or token exposure.

A favorable price move can still produce a loss when it is too small, too late, or already reflected in implied volatility.

The Greeks are a risk dashboard

Delta estimates directional sensitivity, gamma tracks delta’s change, theta represents time decay, and vega measures sensitivity to implied volatility. These measures change as spot, time, and volatility change.

Short-premium positions can appear steady while accumulating tail risk. Long-premium positions can have defined loss but bleed time value. Scenario analysis should include several spot and volatility paths.

Liquidity and settlement

An option chain midpoint is not a guaranteed fill. Check spread and size at each leg. Confirm whether the option cash-settles, delivers a token, or creates a futures position.

Questions

Common points of confusion

Is buying an option safer than using a perpetual?

A buyer’s loss can be limited to premium, but overpaying, time decay, and poor liquidity can still make the trade unattractive.

What is volatility crush?

Implied volatility can fall after an anticipated event, reducing option value even when the underlying moves in the expected direction.

Can an option turn into a futures position?

Some contracts settle into futures. Review exercise and settlement rules before expiration.
