Market structure guide

DeFi derivatives are programmable market infrastructure

Decentralization changes the intermediaries and operating model; it does not make prices, liquidity, governance, or liquidations disappear.

Read the protocol as a stack

List the chain, wallet, front end, contracts, oracle, liquidity source, liquidation actors, governance, and settlement asset. Each component can affect a position independently.

Hybrid systems may use off-chain order matching or sequencing while settling on-chain. Product labels do not reveal the full dependency map.

Oracles and liquidity

Oracles feed reference prices into smart contracts. Liquidity can come from order books, automated market makers, or vaults. The price used for risk can differ from the price available for execution.

Review the DeFi perpetuals risk map for a detailed due-diligence sheet.

Governance is part of the contract

Upgrade authority, timelocks, emergency controls, and parameter changes can alter collateral or market behavior. Audits and public code are useful evidence, not guarantees.

Keep leverage low enough to accommodate transaction confirmation and competing liquidations during stress.

Educational scope: this page explains product mechanics and risk questions. It does not recommend a venue, token, strategy, or leverage level.

Questions

Common points of confusion

Are DeFi perpetuals peer-to-peer?

The economic counterparty may be other traders, liquidity pools, or vaults depending on the design.

What happens if an oracle pauses?

Protocol rules may pause markets, use fallback prices, or limit actions. Review the specific design.

Does an audit guarantee a protocol is safe?

No. Audits can reduce uncertainty but cannot prove that all vulnerabilities or economic failures are absent.

Risk first

Derivatives can produce rapid losses, including liquidation. AltcoinDerivatives.com is an independent educational publication, not a broker, exchange, wallet, adviser, or signal service.
